In 2021, Donald Trump’s social accounts Instagram and Facebook were banned over the US Capitol insurrection. Now after 2 years, Meta has given permission to restore his both accounts.
In a statement Meta’s president of global affairs, Nick Clegg said, “We will be reinstating Mr. Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks.”
Adding that the action would come with “new guardrails in place to deter repeat offenses.”
Clegg said, “Going forward, the Republican leader — who has already declared himself a 2024 presidential candidate — could be suspended for up to two years for each violation of platform policies.”
His spokespersons did not answer on the social platform to the request for comment, so it’s not clear yet when or if Donald Trump will return.
Whereas, Trump a business tycoon says that, Facebook has lost “Billions of dollars in value” in his absence.
Trump shared on a social platform, “Such a thing should never again happen to a sitting President or anybody else who is not deserving of retribution!”
A day after 6th January 2021 Facebook banned Donald Trump’s account.
Angelo Carusone, the president of Media Matters says that “Make no mistake — by allowing Donald Trump back on its platforms, Meta is refueling Trump’s misinformation and extremism engine.”
Scott Gast Trump’s lawyer, in a letter asking for the ban to be overturned, said “Meta had dramatically distorted and inhibited the public discourse.”
Further, Trump’s lawyer demanded a meeting in which a discussion will take place on Trump’s “prompt reinstatement to the platform” of Facebook. Trump was having 34 million followers. Discussing that his position as the leading opponent for the Republican nomination in 2024 justified terminating the ban.
Anthony Romero, American Civil Liberties Union executive director said “Meta was making the right call by allowing Trump back onto the social network.”
In a release, Romero said, “Like it or not, President Trump is one of the country’s leading political figures and the public has a strong interest in hearing his speech.”
“This not only will have an impact on Instagram and Facebook users, but it also presents intensified threats to civil society and an existential threat to United States democracy as a whole.”
