Punjab’s Relief on Driving License Fees

Initially set to take effect on January 1, 2024, the Punjab government announced a substantial hike in driving license fees. However, in a recent update, the deadline was extended until January 9, granting citizens a window to obtain their licenses at the current fee structure.

This decision comes as a response to the government’s earlier move to drastically raise the fees for both car and motorcycle licenses, with the fee for obtaining a driver’s license skyrocketing by 1566%, from Rs. 60 to Rs. 1000. Chief Minister Naqvi’s reprieve brings much-needed relief for the public.

Annual Fee Increase for Driving Licenses

A few days ago, the Punjab government announced increased annual fees for learner permits, renewals, and new driving licenses, effective from January 1, 2024. The Lahore City Traffic Police shared this information on their Twitter handle, revealing that the fees will now be collected on an annual basis instead of the previous five-year structure.

This development follows a strict crackdown by the traffic police against unlicensed drivers in Lahore and other cities of Punjab. The intensified operation was initiated after a tragic car accident involving a teenage driver resulted in the death of six people from the same family. Under the current pressure from the police, a record-high number of people have applied for learner and driving licenses in the last couple of months.

On December 5, the police reported issuing a staggering 74,000 learner permits in a single day in Punjab, with the provincial capital leading the way by issuing 24,000 licenses. This highlights a substantial increase in adherence to licensing requirements.
