BusCaro, founded by Maha Shazhad, is on a mission to revolutionize the way people travel in the country. Forced to drop out of university due to the lack of safe transportation, Shazhad recognized the dire need for a reliable alternative, not just for herself but for countless others facing similar struggles.

According to Maha Shahzad, a staggering 85% of working women in Pakistan have experienced sexual harassment at least once on public transport. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for safer commuting options, prompting the creation of BusCaro.

The startup recently secured $1.5 million in pre-seed funding, led by Orbit Startups and featuring participation from Wahed Ventures and angel investors from the mobility sector. This financial backing reflects the recognition of BusCaro’s innovative approach to transportation challenges in Pakistan.

BusCaro operates on a B2B2C model, collaborating with institutions such as universities and factories to provide reliable transportation solutions. This unique model not only ensures safety for commuters but also helps match demand with supply, ultimately boosting operator incomes while maintaining affordability for users.

Safety is a top priority for BusCaro, with features such as driver background checks, vehicle inspections, and real-time tracking. The platform goes above and beyond by offering an emergency response team, 24/7 customer support, and a live-tracking feature for users to share their locations with friends and family. Notably, a feature designed specifically for women allows them to use a masked name instead of their real name when interacting with drivers.

Since its launch in 2022, BusCaro has expanded its operations to major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. With over 300 vehicles owned by private operators and a daily booking volume exceeding 20,000, the startup is on track to become profitable by early 2024 and has already reached $2.5 million in revenue.

Maha Shazhad’s experience in the ride-hailing industry, including roles at Careem and Swvl, informed the development of BusCaro. Recognizing the limitations of existing models, Shazhad emphasizes that BusCaro’s B2B approach significantly reduces customer acquisition costs, making safe and affordable commuting more accessible to a broader audience.

Commuters in Pakistan often spend a significant portion of their income on transportation, with women, in particular, seeking safer alternatives. BusCaro caters to this demographic, offering a secure mode of transportation for those who may not afford the higher costs associated with traditional ride-hailing services.

As the platform continues to grow, BusCaro plans to expand its partnerships, explore B2C collaborations, and work with the public sector on initiatives like transportation subsidies and government contracts. The company is also exploring the integration of electric vehicles to address rising fuel prices.
