Walt Disney is forming a new unit to focus on AI and augmented reality (AR). This unit will explore their use across film, TV, and theme parks. The Office of Technology Enablement will be led by Jamie Voris, who created Disney’s app for the Apple Vision Pro. Clearly, this move aligns with Disney’s strategy to enhance its experiences using AI and XR (extended reality).
Alan Bergman, Disney’s Entertainment Co-Chairman, emphasized the profound impact AI and XR will have on consumer experiences and business. Additionally, the unit will not centralize all projects. Instead, it will ensure that efforts across various divisions align with Disney’s broader strategy.
Innovation Across Disney Divisions
Meanwhile, Disney is exploring AR, VR, and XR in various divisions. AR overlays digital elements in the real world, while VR immerses users in a fully digital environment. In contrast, XR blends both to create interactive experiences.
Furthermore, Kyle Laughlin, an expert in AR, VR, and AI, rejoined Disney as Senior VP of R&D for Imagineering. He had previously led Amazon’s Alexa Gadgets division before returning to Disney.
Expanding in a Growing Market
As the AR/VR market continues to expand, Disney is positioning itself for future growth. For instance, with companies like Meta, Apple, and Sony leading the way, Disney is assembling a team to explore how these technologies can revolutionize its theme parks and consumer experiences.
In fact, IDC reports that 1.7 million AR/VR headsets were sold this year. As a result, Disney aims to stay ahead by creating groundbreaking attractions that blend the physical and digital worlds.
