Roblox, a popular platform for preteens, is enhancing safety for its youngest players. The platform faced criticism for exposing children to risks like grooming, explicit content, and violence. Now, Roblox has introduced updated safety rules to address these concerns.
Starting in 2024, users aged 12 and under won’t access “unrated experiences” by default. Parents can control these settings to ensure safer browsing. Also, content creators must label their experiences as “All Ages” or “9+” if they want them visible to younger users. These categories allow some mild content, like unrealistic blood or humor, but ban gambling. Creators must submit these classifications by December 3.
Moreover, Roblox will restrict social hangouts and free-form 2D creation for users under 13, effective November 18. This step limits potential safety risks in spaces with open chat and drawing features.
Still, children under 13 can explore many safe, age-appropriate games, including role-playing, building, and interactive play in moderated 3D environments. Roblox is also testing age verification for users over 13, requiring IDs. For certain chat features, users under 13 need parental consent, and those under 9 need permission for moderate content.
In sum, these changes show Roblox’s commitment to creating a safer space for young users.
