Government Blocks 80,000 SIMs to Combat Fake News

The federal government has blocked approximately 80,000 mobile SIMs for spreading fake news. Cabinet Division Parliamentary Secretary Sajid Mehdi shared this during a National Assembly session. The government is tackling fake news on social media. One major step is blocking fake news SIMs.

Mehdi outlined the government’s actions. A joint task force has been formed and submitted its report to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

He stressed the need for changes to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016. These changes would speed up the prosecution of fake news cases.

The government has also moved to register Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to monitor online activity. An awareness campaign is educating citizens about the risks of spreading fake news.

These efforts show the government’s commitment to controlling fake news and ensuring reliable information online.
