Pakistan Declares Public Holiday on Honor Iqbal Day

The Government of Pakistan has declared Saturday, November 9, 2024, a public holiday to observe Allama Iqbal Day. This decision follows a circular issued by the Cabinet Division on December 20, 2023, which listed public and optional holidays for 2024. The notification, signed by Cabinet Secretary Kamran Ali Afzal, ensures widespread awareness through English and Urdu media outlets.

Allama Iqbal, born in Sialkot in 1877, is known as the “Poet of the East.” He inspired Muslims in the Indian subcontinent to seek freedom from British rule and dream of their own homeland. His poetry and philosophy sparked the movement that led to the creation of Pakistan.

Iqbal’s 1930 Allahabad address was a turning point. He envisioned a separate Muslim identity, setting the stage for Pakistan’s formation. On Iqbal Day, the nation honors his legacy with special prayers, a formal Change of Guards ceremony at his mausoleum in Lahore, and events across the country.

Additionally, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announced that all banks will remain closed on November 9 in observance of Iqbal Day. This holiday offers citizens a chance to reflect on Iqbal’s contributions to the nation and his enduring influence.
