The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is gearing up to tackle fake news on social media platforms. According to the details, social media companies have blocked 6,418 URLs involved in spreading fake news.

The authorities sent a total of 15,444 URLs involved in spreading fake news on social media platforms. Social media companies have blocked 6,418 URLs out of 15,444. The companies have refused to block 1315 URLs, while 7,717 URLs are still reachable.
PTA requested 3,214 connections to Facebook for blocking. The social media giant blocked only 2,105 URLs involved in spreading fake news. Facebook has denied blocking only 425 URLs, whereas 684 links or URLs are still accessible.
According to the document, Dailymotion stopped 104 URL links out of 107. Dailymotion has denied blocking only 1 URL, whereas two connections are still reachable.
Instagram blocked 113 links out of 140 on PTA’s request. Instagram has rejected only 8 URLs, whereas 19 links or URLs are still reachable.
YouTube also blocked 422 URLs out of 857 links sent by PTA. YouTube has denied blocking 311 URLs, whereas 124 links are still available.
Tiktok blocked 46 out of 50 links in spreading fake news, although 4 URL connections are still reachable.
The regulators sent 8,413 links to Twitter for stopping, out of which twitter blocked 2,145 links. Twitter denied blocking 545 connections, while 5,641 URLs are still available.
Under section 22 of the PECA Act 2016, PTA contacted the relevant social media platforms to take action against social media accounts and URLs spreading fake news. PTA requested these platforms after receiving complaints from the general public and institutions. After PTA’s request, social media platforms started blocking the accounts identified by PTA that are involved in spreading fake news.
