Punjab’s Anti-Smog Policy: Bold Steps Against Pollution

The Punjab government introduced a new anti-smog policy in the Lahore High Court. Starting next year, weddings will be banned from October to December. This step aims to reduce traffic and energy use during peak smog months.

For the first time, Punjab has set a dedicated budget to combat smog. The court praised this action, noting it as a more effective approach than previous administrations.

Additionally, the policy includes support for farmers. To reduce crop burning, the government will distribute super seeders. This measure addresses a major pollution source during smog season.

The court suggested further actions. These include limiting weddings to single-dish menus and closing businesses by 5 PM. Other countries follow similar practices to lower emissions, unlike Pakistan’s usual late business hours.

As smog worsens in Lahore, pollution levels continue to threaten public health. The city’s air quality index (AQI) regularly hits dangerous levels. Harmful PM2.5 pollutants pose serious health risks, especially for respiratory health. To stay safe, residents should limit outdoor activities and use masks and air purifiers.

Punjab’s anti-smog policy marks a significant first step. However, long-term strategies are necessary to ensure lasting improvements. For cleaner air and a healthier future, the government must keep expanding its efforts.
