Lahore is stepping up efforts to fight smog. Authorities sealed 75 shops, several wedding halls, and 14 restaurants for violating the 8 p.m. closure rule. This action is part of a larger effort to tackle severe air pollution in the city.
In Shalimar Tehsil, authorities shut 9 shops and 3 restaurants. Then, in City Tehsil, they closed 4 shops. Ravi Tehsil saw 12 shops sealed. Following that, Raiwind Tehsil had 4 restaurants and 4 shops closed. In Cantonment Tehsil, authorities shut 5 shops and 3 restaurants. Finally, Saddar Tehsil saw 5 shops closed for non-compliance.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) stepped in last Friday. The court ordered markets to close by 8 p.m. daily and remain closed on Sundays. Justice Shahid Karim emphasized that stricter actions were necessary to combat smog. This ruling followed reports from government departments on their anti-smog efforts.
Furthermore, the court banned trucks and trailers from entering Lahore. It also restricted vehicle movement on the Ring Road and motorways. These measures aim to reduce pollution and safeguard public health.
With these actions, the government hopes to improve Lahore’s air quality. Authorities expect to see noticeable changes in the coming weeks as they enforce new regulations.
