In a progressive step towards inclusive education, the Lahore Education Authority has announced a monthly stipend for intersex or Morphodite individuals enrolled in the Government Girls High School Garden Town. Incorrectly referred to as transgenders, these students will now receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 10,000, with Rs. 5,000 designated as a monthly stipend and an additional Rs. 5,000 as a conveyance allowance.
To be eligible for the monthly stipend, morphodite students must maintain an 80% attendance record. Notably, classes at the Garden Town school have been conducted on the first three days of the week since last year.
This initiative goes beyond financial support, offering intersex students free education, textbooks, and meals. The commitment to quality education is evident in the recruitment of experienced teachers dedicated to providing a nurturing learning environment.
It’s worth mentioning that the first school for the morphodite community was inaugurated in December last year by the former Education Minister Murad Raas. This move follows the establishment of similar schools in other districts of Punjab, including Multan, Bahawalpur, and Dera Ghazi Khan.
The introduction of a monthly stipend demonstrates Lahore’s commitment to fostering inclusive education and empowering every student, regardless of their gender identity. This step aligns with global efforts to create educational environments that embrace diversity and ensure equal opportunities for all.
