Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the distribution of free medicines to various districts, marking a significant milestone in the province’s healthcare sector. The Free Medicine in Punjab initiative aims to improve healthcare delivery by distributing medicines across the province. During her visit to the Central Medicine Warehouse in Maraka, one of the largest storage facilities in the country, the chief minister emphasized enhancing healthcare access throughout Punjab.
Expansion of Medicine Warehouses
CM Maryam directed authorities to expedite the operationalization of medicine warehouses in Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Multan. These facilities will ensure a steady supply of medical resources to hospitals across the region.
She personally supervised the loading and dispatch of medicine trucks to several districts. Additionally, she inspected furniture, medical equipment, and hospital supplies. The chief minister verified the quality and expiry dates of the medicines and reviewed the warehouse’s temperature control systems to ensure proper storage conditions.
A Robust Free Medicine Project
Punjab Health Secretary Ali Jan Khan briefed the chief minister on the warehouse’s functionality. He highlighted the advanced storage facilities, which maintain optimal temperatures to preserve medicine quality. Moreover, efficient transportation systems ensure the prompt delivery of medicines.
Under the initiative, authorities established nine central warehouses, storing medicines worth over Rs. 10 billion. In addition, modern medical equipment valued at Rs. 7 billion, disposable bed sheets, and hospital furniture will reach district hospitals. Hospitals will also receive standardized furniture, advanced medical tools, and medicine trolleys to enhance patient care.
PERA’s Role in Strengthening Governance
In another important development, the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority (PERA) held its first meeting under CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s chairmanship. The meeting approved the establishment of offices, staff appointments, and the formulation of rules and regulations for the authority.
The chief minister stressed the need for transparency, merit-based hiring, and a robust monitoring system to uphold governance standards. PERA will ensure effective healthcare services and maintain high regulatory standards across the province.
