World Bank Approves $240M For Karachi Water Project

The World Bank has approved $240 million for the Second Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP-2). Consequently, this Karachi water sanitation project will enhance water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in Karachi, a city grappling with severe infrastructure challenges. Furthermore, through this initiative, the World Bank aims to make a significant impact on the city’s water and sanitation infrastructure.

Najy Benhassine, the World Bank’s Country Director for Pakistan, emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “Safe WASH services are critical for public health and improving quality of life. They also play a key role in addressing Pakistan’s stunting crisis.”

Key Features of KWSSIP-2

The project builds upon the success of KWSSIP-1 by investing in:

  • Bulk water supply enhancement
  • Upgraded water treatment facilities
  • Expanded wastewater treatment and reuse
  • Improved sewerage networks and water distribution systems

Additionally, the project targets underserved communities, especially informal settlements (Katchi Abadis). Over half a million residents will benefit from these upgrades. Women and youth are central to the project’s impact, with nearly half of the beneficiaries being women, and 58% falling in the 15–24 age group.

Addressing Gender Gaps

KWSSIP-2 also works to reduce gender disparities at the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC). It includes recruitment strategies to hire more women for technical and leadership positions. Training programs and internships will support women graduates, creating pathways for them to advance within the sector.

Impact by 2030 and Beyond

By 2030, the Karachi water sanitation project aims to provide safe water to nearly 16 million people and sanitation services to approximately 7.5 million. It will also strengthen KWSC’s financial sustainability and promote private-sector partnerships in service delivery.

A Broader Vision for Urban WASH Services

This project is part of the Pakistan Urban WASH Services Program, targeting 33.5 million people by 2035. It aligns with a broader South Asia initiative, which aims to reach 100 million people with improved WASH services by the same year.

With co-financing from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and government contributions, the total funding for the project exceeds $759 million.

Conclusion

The Second Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project is a vital step toward addressing Karachi’s water and sanitation challenges. Focusing on sustainability, gender inclusivity, and community benefits, this initiative holds great potential to transform public health and improve economic prospects.
